BEHIND THE SCENE

The Kings credit the smooth operation of their six-month

remodeling project to weekly updates with a builder and architect who regularly work

together. Here are a few key points in their process.

The first major change was to remove

the center portion of the roof for the

addition, which bumps up and out from

the house. Roof tear-down and second-

floor framing took only about two weeks.

Exposing the existing stairs to the attic had

a dramatic impact on the main level. To

minimize disruption, a temporary wall closed

off one entrance to the dining room, which

was still accessible from the kitchen.

Details such as these cedar brackets give

the house a Craftsman look. The final

paint scheme consists of white brackets

and trim, gray brick, green shingle siding

and red window sashes.
